Cobar Shire is situated in the centre of New South Wales at the crossroads of the Barrier Highway and the Kidman Way and has excellent road, rail and air links to most of Australia's capital cities. The town features modern amenities including first class education, health and social facilities. With an area of 45,609 square kilometres, the Shire is almost the same size as the whole of Tasmania. It is home to approximately 5,120 people. The Shire's prosperity is built around the thriving mining - copper, lead, silver, zinc, gold - and pastoral industries, which are strongly supported by a wide range of attractions and activities, that make it a major tourist destination. Tourism in Outback New South Wales continues to increase and Cobar certainly has a great range of attractions to keep visitors in the town. CSA Mine is located approximately 12km North/West of Cobar.
People wishing to relocate to Cobar from the metropolitan areas of NSW may be eligible to receive $7,000 from the NSW Government under their Regional Relocation Grant scheme.
The scheme will operate for four years commencing 1 July 2011 and will provide eligible applicants a one-off payment to assist them with the cost of relocating from their metropolitan home to a regional home.
